Readings for Today

Even among those who love Jesus, it can be hard not to draw conclusions that may not be true.  Sometimes we ask questions that are really none of our business.  Such is the case with Peter.  “What if I want him to remain until I come?  What concern is it of yours?”  We do not know the motivation behind Peter’s question today, but we do get a sense that Jesus wanted Peter to be concerned about his own salvation, and not what might happen to the beloved disciple.  Jesus reminds Peter, “You follow me.

And from this answer of Jesus comes rumors.  The disciples believe they have an inside track on the salvation of the beloved disciple.  But really, they have no such thing.  Just as Jesus is so clever in other instances, so too is Jesus clever here.  He answers Peter’s question with a question.  But from that answer, conclusions are drawn.
