Be prepared. This phrase from the Boy Scouts is well known. It is stated to elicit the notion that boy scouts are ready for any situation. The training and education given to boy scouts is designed to provide such complete skills that regardless of life’s events, a boy scout is always ready to take on whatever comes.
This same motto can be a good one for a Christian too. Be prepared. Because the grace of God is so prevalent, it is always available to us to live life more fully and completely. What is necessary to “Be prepared” is that we face life with our eyes open to be able respond to Christ regardless of the time.
In Buddhism, the concept is expressed as “being awake.” The task of meditation is to eliminate those things that make us sluggish and sleepy. This is what the Eight Fold Path is all about, in terms of removing those things that are barriers that keep us from ultimate fulfillment.
For Christians, it is being attentive so that we are always ready whenever God reaches out to us, which is, in fact all the time. “Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.” Because of the generous and infinite love of Jesus, each of us has indeed been given much. We must be awake to determine God’s will, and to be ready to do it at the moment we know it.
