Yesterday we focused upon the love God has for us. Today we see what can happen to a human being when God’s love becomes pervasive in their life. Today we celebrate the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In the gospel today, we are presented with what might be are you considered a mother’s worst nightmare: the loss of her son. Whether it is in a situation such as the one described today in the gospel, Jesus becomes separated from his parents, or something much worse like a child, it does not take much to empathize with the suffering of Mary.
And this gospel reminds me of a title that has been given to Mary: the refuge of sinners. Even though Mary did not sin,she knew what it is like to lose Jesus. Imagine what it was like for the Blessed Mother. Those days of searching, worrying, wondering if the unthinkable had happened to Jesus. How much anxiety while Our Lady have felt?
