Homily: A rude son?

At first glance, it might seem that Jesus is a rude or ungrateful son. He seems to be ignoring his mother, who has a desire to see him. But as is often the case with the gospels, there is a larger theological point being made. It is not the biological relationship between Jesus and his mother that makes her great, but rather he deep and constant faith in God. Jesus wants to be clear to his followers, indeed to all of us, that it is not an external association that saves us, but getting to know Jesus so well we do his will and accept his undeserved gift of salvation.
