Readings for Today

Are you ready? The feast is set. Come, join in the celebration. There is nothing like a human celebration. Big moments of happiness are meant to be events that call for a lot of people to come. Couples who are getting married want to invite as many people as possible to join them. Priests and deacons who are ordained, brothers and sisters who profess religious life, people who reach significant milestones in their lives all want to make sure they are surrounded by people they love.

So imagine how much more God wants the celebration of eternal life to be filled with all those he has created because he loves. That is why God creates. It is because God loves. And true authentic love is meant, in fact it must, be shared.

Such is the way in which God is pictured in the Bible. He is the one who seeks out the lost, binds up the broken, heals the lame. It is God who seeks to gather those who have gone astray and has forgiven sins. God does all in his power to get our response to his invitation.

But just as we see in the gospel, we see today, that people do not always respond favorably to the call of God. We may think we are too busy, or too tired, or too unimportant or too important to pay any attention to God’s invitation. We may not understand how badly one who loves as powerfully as God loves, wishes to spend time with the beloved.

Couples in love understand this. So too mothers and fathers get it. Priests find this truth when they open their hearts to what God can do in their life, and in the lives of those he seeks to save. To respond to this generous invitation we must be as ready as things are for the banquet. We pray, seek silence, remain close to the sacraments, seek out the spiritually wise, and open our hearts in a way that says yes over and over again to God.

And so get ready. Say yes to God. He could not be more happy to see you.
