Readings for Today

We all do it. We say one thing, but do another. I jokingly refer to my “top ten list of sins”, since it seems despite my desire to change, I fall into the same things. And sometimes, like today, it is the case that I think I know the right answer, and I do, but I do not understand what the answer means. Peter knew the right answer – Jesus was the Christ. But he did not understand what it meant for Jesus to be the Christ. The problems of saying one thing, but doing another, are obvious. A “double life” undercuts every aspect of our authenticity. But understanding that we can know, but not understand, and we can say, but not do, means that we have the invitation to God’s grace. For it is only by surrendering to the will of God, and absorbing his grace that we can truly say AND do, know AND understand.

Homily given at Our Lady of Lourdes, University City, Missouri, on September 16, 2018.
