Readings for Today

At first glance, it may seem that when Jesus speaks of his mother, he is a bit rude. He says her request is not his concern. He seems to indicate he will not see his mother when she comes to talk to him. He doesn’t appear concerned when she is looking for him. But to get a deeper understanding, we need to see a major point of the gospels. Mary, the Mother of God, is not privileged primarily because she is the biological mother of Jesus. No, she is privileged because she hears the Word of God and acts on it. If we are externally religious, appearing to believe, but our actions do not indicate we act on the Word of God we have heard, we are hypocrites. Hear what Jesus has to say: hear the Word of God and act on it.
