Readings for Today

Remember when we had statesmen? A time when there were those figures in our lives, men and women, who could find the legitimate compromise between conflicting positions that enabled both sides to be true to their conscience? Remember when it was possible to disagree, even on very contentious issues, without resorting to an immediate attack on one’s character? There were such times politically in this country, even in the midst of very contentious discussions on complex issues. While it would not be accurate to describe every age before as having demonstrated this mature debate, when considering the way in which we cannot seem to discuss any issue in a reasonable fashion, it is still no less attractive today to imagine its possibility.
