There can be an overwhelming temptation in our lives to think we must do everything ourselves. Today Jesus even seems to suggest that to the disciples. But in reality, in today’s gospel, Jesus is helping to make a point. To be truly fed, to be truly satisfied it takes God. Only God can fill the emptiness in our hearts. I am sure the disciples did not expect Jesus to do what he did. In fact, they seemed to be frustrated that Jesus did not see things as he did. And yet, he reminds them that in ordinary ways he does extraordinary things.
Homily given at Christian Brothers College High School, Town and Country, Missouri, on March 26, 2019.
