Readings for Today

While I do not know what it is like to be a parent, I was graced to have parents I always knew loved me. The passed on their faith to me, they gave me all I needed, and a lot of what I wanted. And Saints Joachim and Ann, the saints we celebrate today, certainly knew what it meant to create a home of faith. As parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, they instilled in their daughter the belief in God that would takes such root she would not sin and would become the mother of Jesus. So if you are a parent, seek the prayers of Saints Joachim and Ann. And if your relationship with your parents needs healing, then ask them to pray that God send healing into your life.

Readings for Today

Last week on Tuesday we celebrated the Assumption of Mary.  Mary did not sin, and so Mary did not receive the consequences of sin.  She did not die. More than that, today we celebrate her high place in heaven.  Mary is our Queen.  She is the queen of all saints.  Her “yes” to God was total.  She did not hold back any part of her will to following God.

What this means for us is a powerful intercessor.  We know Mary can only lead us to Jesus.  It is not possible she leads us astray.  The Eastern Church, in her icons, demonstrates this.  Mary is always pictured with a hand pointing to Jesus.  He is always the center.  Today, may we ask Mary to pray for us, that we too might follow her generous response to God.

Readings for Today (Mass during the day)

There are moments when we might wish to have lived in a different time.  How many have longed to be alive in the time of Jesus? How many seek to live during the time of our favorite saint? When we think this way, we forget that regardless of when we live, the mission is always to follow Jesus.  We must see how Jesus is alive.  We must seek God in all things. It does not matter when we live, but what we do.

Where is God in your life? How does God call you to holiness? What is it that gives life? We live during the present age because God wants us to.  And because God wants us to, God also gives us all the grace we need.  Becuase Mary knew this and remained close to God, she was rewarded by God with the immediate presence.  She did not have to wait for death but rather went right to God.
